WIXOM, Mich., July 9, 2007 – The Visionalist Entertainment Productions crew is on the road again, this time traveling to Greece and Crete in July to film first-hand scenes of the culture that is responsible for Detroit’s vibrant , world-famous Greek community. The sequences will form a visual core to ‘Our Greek Story’, the third in a series of documentaries that Visionalist, led by producer/director Keith Famie, has created for WXYZ.
The documentary series, ‘Our Story Of’, traces Detroit’s ethnic heritage from its roots to its current incarnation. ‘Our Italian Story’, which ran in December, and ‘Our Polish Story’, which ran in June, have been extremely well received by Detroit media.
“Our Greek Story’ will include profiles of Bill Damas, a Detroit-based contractor who came to the United States at the age of seventeen with little more than his clothing and has built one of the largest construction companies in the area. Among the scenes that the Visionalist crew will film is the 12 x 12 hut where Damas was raised with eight brothers and sisters—a marvelous contrast to the more than one million square feet of office space that Damas currently leases. He will share with us the simple mountain life of a Cretan.
Another inspiring sequence in ‘Our Greek Story’ will focus on Despina Kartakis, who in May of 1941 was severely wounded during the Nazi invasion of Crete and still carries the scars. Kartakis returns to the site of her wounding every year, and the story of her remarkable survival through an endless series of reconstructive surgeries, will form an enriching base to the documentary, and will symbolize many of the sacrifices and successes of Detroit’s Greek-American population.
Visionalist Entertainment Productions was recently honored with three Michigan Emmy awards for the locally produced documentary, "Our Italian Story,” about Detroit's Italian immigrants. The 29th annual Michigan Emmy Awards, presented by the Michigan Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, were held June 16 at the Gem Theatre in Detroit.
Famie received Emmy awards for Director–Post-Production and Human Interest-Program/Special. Brian Shaffer of Southfield, Mich.-based Kinetic Post received an Emmy for Editor-Program (Non-News) for his work on “Our Italian Story.”
“Our Italian Story” was the first installment in a series of ‘Our Story Of’ documentaries by director and producer Famie, co-executive producers Toni Wisne Sabina and Steve Sabina and writer Chris Kassel exploring Detroit’s multi-ethnic populations. “Our Italian Story” was televised locally and commercial-free on WXYZ-TV 7 in December 2006.
“I feel fortunate that we can bring the wisdom and stories of some of Detroit's elder immigrants to an audience who cares to watch and listen. Every interview I do touches me personally,” said Famie. “Professionally, this is a tremendous honor for me.”
“Our Greek Story” is set to air commercial-free on WXYZ in November, 2007.
