UP SIDE DOWN FRENCH TOAST

3 Granny Smith Apples

Dry or Stale French Bread

Brown Sugar

Butter

4 Eggs

4 C. Milk

1 & 1/3 C. Sugar

1½ tsp. Grated Lemon Peel

1 tsp. Vanilla

½ tsp. Salt

½ tsp. Nutmeg

Cut bread into 1½ thick slices. In bowl, beat together eggs, milk, sugar, lemon peel, vanilla, salt, nutmeg. Arrange bread in a single layer in a small baking dish and pour egg mixture over. Turn once, egg mixture should be all soaked up. Heat oven to 325~. Grease a small baking dish and line with waxed paper. Spread a ¼ inch layer of brown sugar and dot generously with butter. Core, peel and slice apples. Arrange apples in baking dish. Arrange soaked bread over apples. Bake on top rack in a water bath for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until brown. Cover with foil when top has browned lightly. Drain liquid from corners of the baking dish and save. Turn over French Toast onto a platter, pour liquid around bread on platter
